Thanx for all the advice. I think I’ve decided to stick to whats comfortable and since I’m already in the habit of doing both I figure if I work at getting faster and cleaner with one and slower and cleaner with the other they’re bound to meet up at some point. I don’t think of the forearm/arm playing so much as “cheating” as an inaccurate and hard to accent way of playing fast comfortably but without control. And its harder to perfect because you have to start fast instead of slow like u should

My advice to you would be to not use anything but your hand and fingers when you pick. Then force yourself to focus on becoming a lot faster with that one technique. Record your maximum speed now and then try it out for a month. Then see what has happened. I never used the arm technique because someone said it was “cheating” so I never allowed my self to go there. So I had to stick with the one technique or risk being ridiculed : ) But of course it’s not cheating! It’s just one way of doing it

That’s a really good example of someone who doesn’t use short cuts. It’s not bad to use them if they work for you! But it sounds like you want something else. John Petrucci seems to use his arm when he picks fast, so he has one technique for the slower lines and another one for the faster lines. I only use one. And that’s not better. It seems more convenient because I don’t have to change techniques but it also requires you to focus on attaining speed with that one technique alone.

Here’s the deal: Imagine someone holding a gun to your head while you practiced. And if you tensed up your arm or hand in anyway, he would pull the trigger. In our pursuit of speed our brain is constantly looking for short cuts to greater results faster. Anything else than a relaxed picking hand is a short cut. Your goal should be to pick fast, using the same muscles as when you pick slow. Look at Paul gilberts hand.

Question wiz.
The way I normally pick, my fingers tend to bounce around when I hit the strings and as I get faster they get more tense until I get to a point where I have to change techniques to a more relaxed type of wrist/forearm picking.
But I can only do it exclusively for faster stuff and the other for slow to moderately fast stuff.
Kinda like the saying “You can only walk so fast until you eventually have to run/jog to go any faster”.
Any advice? its my biggest obstacle
