I am the head of a small music group, and we wanted to find some place in Manhattan where we could play some quiet music to raise money. I see individuals doing this all the time in central park, but wanted to know if it is legal/if you need a permit?

Yes, you need a permit to play music for money in any NYC park.

You’re in luck, “Make Music New York,” a day on which anyone can perform music anywhere on NY’s streets for free is on June 21st, see the link below!
Other than that, while a single person with a guitar or violin or whatever can probably get away with “busking” in Central Park, a group of people will definitely need a permit, but don’t worry, such a permit may only cost $25 bucks or so. Check out the second link below for more info…
