What is a good scary name for a fictional island?
Question by Shinobu M: What is a good scary name for a fictional island?
I’m writing a story that takes place on an island with lots of demons and monsters. I can’t quite come up with a good name for it. I’ve considered “Isle of Lamentation” but I think that’s too long.
Can anyone please help me?
If you know a website that has a list of REAL scary islands, or at least islands with scary-sounding names, I would also appreciate it.
Thank you.

Isle of Dogs
Les Iles de Chien
Ratnest Island
Harbuhan!!!! ( Despair of a tortured soul in whatever language you want.
Study a human skeleton and find an obscure bone to use as a name. There are some pretty scary names, making “skull island” seem like a theme park.
I would suggest using words in Latin, Spanish or Italian
for example come up with some scary or somewhat disturbing words in English and then find the same word in another language until you find something that has a nice sound to it… this will add a little mystery.
words like death or despair for example.
Utopia
Random names (I’m just doing these by phonetics, as they don’t feel like names for nice places):
Vulangar
Roathke
Catheed
Creed
Rusk
You could call t the Isle of Lament instead? Or just Lament (like I’ve seen someone’s work with a city called Rachel before, so using things that already exist as names for places is perfectly fine)
Others:
Perdition
The Quiet Place
The Island of No Return (wooooo) <—jk
Effrayant Island. (Effrayant means ‘scary’ in french)
When in the same situation i’ve always used online translators. I’ve just translated a word relating to the thing im trying to name, into a bunch of other languages. I always find something good.
For example. ‘Potwora’ means ‘Monster’ in Polish. Now if you change it around a little you could come up with Rottora (Rot-aw-rah). So it could be Isle of Rottora.
Just an idea. Try it out
