What’s the difference between Stephen King horror and horror in movies such as the Saw series?
Question by Adam B: What’s the difference between Stephen King horror and horror in movies such as the Saw series?
I love everything by Stephen King. He is supposed to be the ‘master of the horror.’ Why is it that I don’t dislike anything by him, but I hate movies such as the Saw series. I thought it might be the gore, but then I realized Stephen King has much gore in many parts of his stories/movies.

Because Stephen King is more about characters and the flow of the story. Horror is just something he can’t help himself from throwing in. Most horror novels and movies focus on the gore and pop ups instead of the most important aspects like character development.

that’s the difference, his stuff has a plot and heart, plus characters you can identify with/root for. try reading dean koontz sometimes, he’s been called the “thinking mans” stephen king.
Bottom line is Stephan King’s movies have a story to them. It’s a shame that when his stories go to movies they are ruined. Saw movies have ‘forgettable’ characters while Stephan King’s characters have depth and are memorable.
I’m in a love-hate relationship with Stephen King. Some of his movies are wonderful, but some are downright stupid.
Prime example is The Mist. A lot of people liked this movie but I thought it was idiotic. Straight robbery of tons of video games, namely Doom & Half-Life.
However, even SKs worst movies are a million times better than the Saw series, save the first one. The first Saw was a absolute masterpiece. I don’t know about you but the ending had my mouth hanging wide open for at least 15 minutes wondering wth I just saw. Since then the movies have become more and more unbearable.
I have no interest in torture porn, and for the most part, neither does Stephen King. Movies like Saw, Hostel, Turistas, etc. are all the same. They trade true horror in for making your stomach turn and its not even close to the same.
SK, in a lot of his movies, gets into your head. Horrors that screw with you psychologically are the best kind.
The first saw did this. The rest have left that out of the picture.
BUT if you are truly a horror movie buff. You need to expand your horizons to some Asian horror films.
Nothing Hollywood has put out in nearly 50 years can come close to some of the Asian Horrors out there.
One I must recommend to any horror buff, if you want to get your pants scared off is:
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
Now you MUST make sure that you watch the version from Korea and NOT the American version. The American version isn’t scary in the least. The Korean Version (which is the first version, Hollywood remade it because it won like 15 awards [which horror films never do] at several different film festivals.)
will have you wanting to call your mommy and ask if you can come over and sleep with her tonight.
WATCH IT! But beware!
Stephen King movies are more about the story and the characters, while the Saw movies are about shock value and gore. As a horror fan I think the Saw movies are garbage.

Stephen King builds up his characters so much, that they seem very real. So, when the gore happens, if it is happening to the characters, or if the character is witnessing it, then you really feel for the character.
Most of the recent horror films aren’t scary as such — they’re just slasher flicks — but when Stephen King does horror, it’s usually imaginary characters, or family men going crazy. It’s never a slasher with Stephen King — it’s always real horror.
If you can give me a straightforward slasher book by Stephen King, I’ll burn my copies.
