Jackson Browne & David Lindley – For A Dancer Live USA 2006
Enjoy this show… The song start at 3.30 mn…. FOR A DANCER Keep a fire burning in your eye Pay attention to the open sky You never know what will be coming down I don’t remember losing track of you You were always dancing in and out of view I must have thought you’d always be around Always keeping things real by playing the clown Now you’re nowhere to be found I don’t know what happens when people die Can’t seem to grasp it as hard as I try It’s like a song I can hear playing right in my ear That I can’t sing I can’t help listening And I can’t help feeling stupid standing ’round Crying as they ease you down ‘Cause I know that you’d rather we were dancing Dancing our sorrow away (Right on dancing) No matter what fate chooses to play (There’s nothing you can do about it anyway) Just do the steps that you’ve been shown By everyone you’ve ever known Until the dance becomes your very own No matter how close to yours Another’s steps have grown In the end there is one dance you’ll do alone Keep a fire for the human race Let your prayers go drifting into space You never know what will be coming down Perhaps a better world is drawing near And just as easily it could all disappear Along with whatever meaning you might have found Don’t let the uncertainty turn you around (The world keeps turning around and around) Go on and make a joyful sound Into a dancer you have grown From a seed somebody else has thrown Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own And somewhere between the …

I’m old enough to have listened to Jackson’s albums when they first came out. He is simply one the best alltime songwriters. This song is one of my favorite Jackson songs, however it’s most sad knowing that Dan Fogelberg who died a few years back, sang great harmony on the original version of For a Dancer.
Both will be playing in Chicago Sep 23, 2010. Tickets go on sale today!
(This is not meant to be an ad, just a notice to JB & DL fans)
I wish I could have been there it looks like a good show. I saw him at Red Rocks many years ago.
AZG…. miss ya Bro!
How fun that the videographer recorded all the silliness getting ready to sing. That is part of the charm of Jackson’s shows; the banter between songs. I cannot wait to see the upcoming Jackson/David tour this summer.
i pray for us the human race but after 45 years it’s getting harder look at the world now thanks jackson for all the many hours you brought to me. every time you made it easeir all the hurt love you and you to david
love this like i do my princess
Fantastic song !
Thanks for posting this.
This is just a beautiful, beautiful song. I saw Jackson Browne play solo acoustic down in Mesa a couple years ago and we were right down in front by the stage. It was maybe the best concert I’ve ever attended. Song after amazing song…
Still Love You Jackson.
Ooo, lucky you! He hasn’t posted a gig in the UK yet for this tour, but I am hopeful! I saw him this year with his band, and as much as I loved it, I still really want to see an acoustic set.
The man is aging gracefully. Still has all the parts to put on a great show, My little brother and I will be sitting on the 18th row center when he comes to Memphis Dec 4th.
This is one of my favorite songs. What a gifted man Jackson Browne is. Saw him at Red Rocks this year and again he put on the best show ever!
How’d he look? I saw some photos of him on Google that I think were recent, and he didn’t look so hot. =( I’m a little worried.
saw him last week at ravinia and i agree, his voice as good as it was 30 years ago when I saw him here. Loved hearing Fountain of Sorrow and For a dancer…great memories became reality all over again. JB is the best!
I just saw JB in concert and his voice is still as good as ever! An excellent concert from one of the best!
Thanks for posting these vids Flo, i’ve watches every1 of them, Love JB and DL.
There is a ghost on every corner, But Philadelphia is full of amazing , blinding beautiful memories .don,t touch you nose..Jackson its crowing (lol)
but you are still amazing poet…
Like Beethoven once did, he does. His lyrics are romantic, yet rational. They are inspirational, yet nearly despondent. As I said, I know this life. He seeks the same peace we all do; you know, that feeling he likes to sing about. For some reason, the expression of it is like a relation that soothes me. His music brings me an overwhelming sense of peace as nothing before in my life ever has. He is just a beautiful man. The beauty of his music is in harmony with my nature.Hope that’s good enough.
He is simultaneously decent, yet complex, qualities that most modern critics wrongly think can’t exist in one human being. I concede that some aspects of my appreciation of his music is subjective, but in all honesty, the experience of music is always subjective. There’s nothing he can’t do. I could give you 10 to 20 songs of his that when seen or heard in real time make you understand things about life you never did, they can move you, make you cry. His music represents the human condition.
I will attempt to explain: He is the best lyricist I have ever come across. Bob Dylan is really not in the same league. Jackson captures human relationships as I see them. He expresses a sorrow that I feel. He is a poet. He puts so much meaning into so few words. His music fits. It is not some modern pretentious attempt at bold creativity. The music is simple, the words are abyssal. His own feeling pours into his music and through to me. I sense him, I can feel his plight.
I like him, too, but can you explain why you give him such a superlative rating? I’m curious.
Thank Floflo! JB has always been one of my favorites and this song in particular. The guy has a way with lyrics that few can match.
What about Dylan?
