This is the flip side of the paper plate that gives us fans unique insight into Billie’s arrangement of the set list. After two new songs, "Nuclear Family" and "Carpe Diem," Billie later decided to go with the frenetic "Murder City" first before the slower "Hitchin’ A Ride." "Longview" was subsequently deferred until later in the set between two other new songs, continuing the interleave of old and new.

Also, fans got the additional "Going to Pasalacqua" on the final side of the plate as well as the impromptu (and personal favorite) "Paper Lanterns" right beforehand.

Lastly, you’ll notice that at the end of the opening Welcome to Paradise (by JollyElm on YouTube) that Billie motions to Mike and Tre for an audible. Billie likely figured the crowd would benefit from another familiar song, "American Idiot," to get moving before launching into the first two new songs.

Thanks for reading. More importantly, thanks to the Billie, Mike, Tre, and Jason for the surprise show at Mezzanine for the Rip Curl Pro Search Kick Off Party, presented by the Surfrider Foundation.

FUR, FEARS AND PHOBIAS

Though this image is a part of the 5 December 2005 Second Snow Set at www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/sets/1548582/ when taking this series of pictures I could not help but reflect on my 2005 Black History Month Tribute pertaining to Black Face Mannequins geocities.com/elvertbarnes/BlackFace-Mannequin.html. In researching for the project I came across the essay The Children on My Knee at www.greatlinx.com/Knee.html by Len Cooper that sheds light on some concerns when as a 52 year old black man I take pictures of mannequins and window displays such as those that, over the years, I have captured at Rizik’s.

My first subission to the group Fears www.flickr.com/groups/fears/pool/ discusses the impact that racism may play in so called phobias www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/68225196/in/pool-fears/. I suggest that racsim has little, if anything to do with fear. Nor is ‘homophobia’ an accurate term.

I fear nothing. No anyone.

And certainly do not fear racist reactions directed towards me that some will rationalize as a phobia or ignorance. However, racism directed towards me has had devastating impact and affects on my life.

My concern when I take pictures such as this one is that I may end up in jail … for taking pictures. As was the concern of Len Cooper when, as a young boy in the early 60′s, his mother warned him about looking at nude white mannequins in store window displays.

In my writings, I now shed light on the reaction that I get when I photograph mannequins. And store window displays. Which is not unlike the reaction that I have gotten, in the past, when I have photographed white women.

Or, in most cases, that I have had relationships with white men.

In Cooper’s essay he suggests that, like the white mannequins, the white people who discriminated against him, had no souls.

My concerns are not based on irrational fears, that some may would refer to as phobias. They are based on my experiences, as a black man.

A black man who, over the years, practiced integration. And when I say integration I mean, in every since the word.

The fact that I still take such pictures on a regular basis attests to my conviction. And lack of fear. My lack of fear does not mean that I will not be deterred or detained. Just as my integrated relationships, in no way, should infer that I was not discriminated against.

Had I allowed racism to affect my picture taking I would not have taken this picture … on Friday evening, 5 December 2005. Nor, over the years, would I have practiced integration.

My concern, when taking this serious of pictures, was that folks would racianize their racism by projecting the scenario that i was photographing the window display so as to case the place.

Had a bad white such a thought would not entered into anyones mind. Nor would I have concerns of then being placed under surveillance … for taking pictures … as often is the case.

And when I comment on such matters, it is not uncommon for folks to respond "Don’t you understand why …?".

"This is the largest Hard Rock Cafe in the world, and it’s design is simply amazing.

The main dining room is HUGE and there’s all sorts of cool stuff all over the walls, a suit (schoolboy) wore by Angus Young of AC/DC hangs in one of the booths…

This one has specialized rooms….there’s a Florida room – highlighting bands and musicians from Florida. There’s a CBGB room, with a spotlight on the legendary punk club from NYC.

Upstairs, there’s a "Legends" room I think it’s called…it’s got the shirt Jimi Hendrix wore at Woodstock, along with his guitar and some handwritten letters and lyrics…a Bob Dylan guitar…ALSO the room is designed with acoustics in mind, because if you stand in the middle of the room and talk, the ceiling is designed to bounce sound, so it sounds like you’re in the middle of a surround-sound system.

The other room upstairs is the "Beatles" room. The entry way is made of the actual bricks and very important to Beatles history…there’s all sorts of crazy signed rare stuff, including John Lennon’s handwritten "Imagine" lyrics…

From The Beatles room, there’s a door that takes you to a secret room….on the walls of the secret room is a signed airplane menu from the 60s that some guy on an airplane got for his daughter "I don’t know who you are, but my daughter might"

The secret room is called "The Lennon Room" and it’s modeled after John Lennon’s New York apartment…they have Lennon’s couch in there, and some of his suits, and some of his paintings…and in one corner of the room, a grand piano, with each key signed by a different famous piano player, Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder – it’s magic."
