Does it make sense for a new artist breaking into the music industry – to create homemade videos of their band and their songs and post them on YouTube? Interestingly enough, there have been many stars born on YouTube, and you can expect this to continue. Occasionally, these songs go viral along with the video, and they attract a promoter from the music industry, to sign up these up-and-coming stars, and invest marketing dollars to promote them to the next level of stardom.

Now then, does this mean that anyone who puts lots of YouTube videos up of their band is sure to go viral, and establish a following of loyal fans to their music? Absolutely not, the chances are very slim, but they do exist and it is one more avenue these new artists can try to get well known, and break into the music industry. In fact, there are now buzz marketing firms which will help a new band get going on the social networks, and work to get their videos in front of hundreds of thousands of Facebook friends, who may then again tweet about the new band.

No one knows for sure how these social networks will evolve and how they will help the music industry, or hurt it. Many believe that with the illegal downloading of songs online, it meant the end of the music industry, but this may only be the beginning as the industry adjusts to the new norm. Whether the industry decides to adapt, or sue those who do illegal downloading, you can expect that these less than ethical downloads, and the viral online YouTube videos will continue for some time in the future.

The Chinese have an interesting proverb and curse; “May you live in interesting times,” and let’s not forget that the symbol for crisis in the Chinese language is also one with the symbol for opportunity, and they are interchangeable. Perhaps the music industry needs to consider all this, learn to go with the flow, and to kayak down the roaring river to greater future profits. Please think on this.

"This is the largest Hard Rock Cafe in the world, and it’s design is simply amazing.

The main dining room is HUGE and there’s all sorts of cool stuff all over the walls, a suit (schoolboy) wore by Angus Young of AC/DC hangs in one of the booths…

This one has specialized rooms….there’s a Florida room – highlighting bands and musicians from Florida. There’s a CBGB room, with a spotlight on the legendary punk club from NYC.

Upstairs, there’s a "Legends" room I think it’s called…it’s got the shirt Jimi Hendrix wore at Woodstock, along with his guitar and some handwritten letters and lyrics…a Bob Dylan guitar…ALSO the room is designed with acoustics in mind, because if you stand in the middle of the room and talk, the ceiling is designed to bounce sound, so it sounds like you’re in the middle of a surround-sound system.

The other room upstairs is the "Beatles" room. The entry way is made of the actual bricks and very important to Beatles history…there’s all sorts of crazy signed rare stuff, including John Lennon’s handwritten "Imagine" lyrics…

From The Beatles room, there’s a door that takes you to a secret room….on the walls of the secret room is a signed airplane menu from the 60s that some guy on an airplane got for his daughter "I don’t know who you are, but my daughter might"

The secret room is called "The Lennon Room" and it’s modeled after John Lennon’s New York apartment…they have Lennon’s couch in there, and some of his suits, and some of his paintings…and in one corner of the room, a grand piano, with each key signed by a different famous piano player, Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder – it’s magic."

Music theory and other discussions around music could be taught easily with nothing more than a computer, headset and Internet access.

All musical instruments can also be taught Online. There are two factors that need to be considered in regard to teaching a musical instrument online. Showing the student the chords, scales, harmonic techniques etc. Then there is the audio aspect, e.g. how to allow both the tutor and student to clearly hear both sides without feedback or distortion.

The visual aspect can be achieved through the use of good lighting, and a decent moveable webcam which can be manually repositioned for wide or close up shots of the instrument during play.

The audio aspect can be achieved several ways, none of which require expensive hardware or great precision. These are discussed more in the next sections. If your instrument is your voice then this is very simple, as all you need is a microphone and headphones, or even just a headset which combines the headphones and microphone.

Operating Systems & Software For Tutors Wanting To Teach Online.

Whether you have a Windows, MAC or Linux based computer you should have no problems teaching music online. The only specialist software you need is some communication tools. These tools are often referred to as “Instant Messaging” software or IM for short. All of these IM tools are free to download and easy to use. I would recommend you download and install all of the most widely used ones, e.g. Skype, Live MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and OoVoo. All of those tools offer great two way webcam chat for free. Not only is this software free, but all of these are also free to use as often as you like to communicate one to one with anyone anywhere in the world.

Online Music Teaching Setup – The Cheap & Simple Method

We have proven that perfectly good results are easy to achieve. All you need is a cheap USB or mini jack based microphone, headphones, and a cheap USB webcam with its own stand. You will have to experiment with the positioning of the microphone so that the instrument and your voice can be heard equally well. Depending on the instrument you wish to teach you may have to experiment a little with positioning of the webcam. Teaching Piano for example may require that you clamp the webcam to an adjustable stand, such as a microphone stand. You can then swing it overhead of certain parts of the keyboard for close-up action. None of this is difficult to do and it can be quite fun inventing your own ways to achieve this. Duct taping the webcam to a multi-angle poise light for example may help solve the lighting and positioning all in one go.

Online Music Teaching Setup – The Advanced Method

If you already work in a studio or have a home studio setup, you probably already have high quality microphones and a mixing console. In this scenario you would mic up or direct input your instrument into the mixing console and have a separate microphone connected to talk through. You can then adjust the mix volume of your voice and instrument accordingly. You could then output the mix to your computers audio ‘line in’ input and use that as your microphone source in the instant messaging tool.

Whatever the scenario, it helps if you can ask a friend at another location to help with setting this up so that you can practice moving the microphone and webcam about whilst they pretend to be the student and tell you how it looks and sounds at their end. Once you have it setup it will be ready to use each time and you’ll be confident it sounds and looks great.

Conclusion

So far we have discussed the reasons why we think it’s an excellent idea to consider teaching music online. The types of music that can be taught online and the sorts of simple software and equipment required to achieve this.

Other important aspects you need to consider include how to take online payments and how the booking process would work. This is an area that can be quite complex in an online world, but thankfully there are services out there which do all of this for you, leaving you to get on with teaching music.
