Pyan-Se the mouse

Another one of my stupid stories.

I was walking to work and on my way met a friend who works at the Young Naturalists Club. She was carrying a large box. We stopped to talk, she put the box on the ground, and mice started crawling out. "Food for the raptors and hedgehogs, – she said, – our chiefs’ policy, showing the kids the food chain model". I know she’s not exactly enthusiastic about this part of the job, to say the least, but it’s difficult to make a captive crippled owl eat anything else, and there is a whole bunch of predators in the mini-zoo there… Anyway. The mice were "discarded" lab animals from the Cytology and genetics institute who’d otherwise be euthanized. Some’d suffered from mouse pox and their little faces and hands were scarred. There were dozens of them in the box. Naturally, I grabbed a handful of those mice and brought them (three of them, actually) home. One of them, a really sweet and friendly longhair albino, died several weeks later; it’d been pretty ill despite the treatment I gave it but it passed away peacefully. The other two, fawn girls, were healthy, and one turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to three babies, two fawn and one jet black. The other one must’ve suffered from hunger because she’s been overcompensating ever since. You can see the result. It’s just her, the rest are slim and fit. She’s active and thriving, it’s just that she’s not just FAT, she’s the biggest and fattest mouse I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen lots of mice. I named her after the similarly shaped Korean snack, ??.

There are a lot of amazing mouse varieties in the ICG SB RAS, they’re like a hidden treasure – I’ve never seen anything similar at any fancy mouse websites or anywhere else – they have curly-haired, spiral-tailed, tiny-eared, longhair, bald, bulldog-legged mice of all imaginable colours (black, orange, silvery, lilac, chocolate, tan, mottled….). Really interesting. It’s such a pity that there are no simple ways of getting those mice as pets (just imagine how many of them are discarded after experiments, and it would be so great if at least some of those became house pets, they’re so pretty and sweet).

Christmas in Work

I made a stupid bet during the day of our Christmas Do that if a certain event in work happened, (that I never thought would happen) I would drink ten shots of Sambuca that evening.
My telling you this tale is obviously as a result of that event coming true and me drinking ten shots of Sambuca.
My next memory after downing the last shot (I drank 9, I spilt the 10th) was waking up the next morning with an extremely sore ankle and about 80% of my brain missing.
The first thing Cath said to me was “I don’t know where your glasses are, you didn’t have them on when you got home” and that immediately got me worried.
What transpired over the next few hours of me waking the next day was that I had lost my wallet, lost my mobile, lost my glasses (which Cath found outside the house with an arm broken off), taken the skin off my knees and one palm and badly damaged my ankle. My only saving grace upon realising the havoc that had befallen me was that the previous night, before going out, I had removed all the cards from my wallet except my cash point card. The only telephone call that was important, was to cancel my cash point card and this was achieved with one quick easy call to India which also confirmed no one had used the card.

I had to get new glasses from Boots (£75), a new wallet (£8), I’d lost about £40 and over the next few days afterwards, I developed a black eye and badly bruised foot/ankle.
This happened nearly two weeks ago and my ankle whilst isn’t bruised is still very swollen and still quite painful. I hasten to add I have not sought any medical advice over it but I’m beginning to think I need to.

Don’t make bets you can’t pay especially if the forfeit is drinking shots of Sambuca.

This was taken earlier today while my shadow and I were walking along a small creek. We could barely take five steps without finding trash thrown about. This was even in a park (LaFortune Park Tulsa Oklahoma) with plenty of trash cans available…?????? WHY ??????
