Good but incomplete because it lacks the backstory of these events., June 19, 2016

This is a slow burn, and so the tension builds slowly, painfully, with always just a hint of fear. The sense of wanting to get away is palpable. Definitely a great story about how mental health issues, family love, and the power of fathers can combine to cause trouble…especially when the only help from the outside world means family separation. I generally dislike kneejerk disdain in movies, especially kneejerk disdain against religion. But this movie worked because it showed the main events as they supposedly happened. Some will see this movie as primarily about mental illness that and others will see it as an indictment of religious control mania issues. Depends on how one wants to see it and if one has grudges against and old evangelical uncle. For this reason, I wish we had learned a bit more about the father’s backstory, or even the mom’s. So we could have some context for all that happened. By only showing the events of the present, the filmmaker is being a bit cowardly, I think, because leaving an open ending up to interpretation is the wrong way to go if one hasn’t shown the character’s past. How then can one judge what the girl is turning her back to at the end? And how can one differentiate between the man, the illness, and the religion? Especialy because the film is so short, so the fillmmaker had time to do a more indepth character study of the “villain” or his family. So, for that reason, I can’t say it’s a perfect movie.

Excellent acting with a powerful story. A religious zealot Father and a brain damaged mother who hardly speaks. Add to that the siblings which are also under his complete domination. SPOILER ALERT: He becomes increasingly unhinged when he takes off with his family to escape the mess he was in and ends up molesting his own daughter. Things just get worse from that point on…

A better ending would have been to see him flat out dead at the end of the film.

The subtitles were good with no problems at all.

A moving and tragic tale viewed through the eyes of a young daughter trapped in a family ruled by a religious fanatic father. The drama moves somewhat slowly, but I think that was to give us, the viewers, the slow moving descent into madness the family experiences as the father disintegrates. I agree with some of the viewers here that a backstory MIGHT have helped this film, but watching the performances of the actors and the cleverly placed dialogue was enough to put the pieces together, The actors and actresses were all convincing in their roles, and it really tugs at the hearts of the viewer to watch the family descend into madness. It held my interest all the way to its shocking conclusions. I feel that this film raises questions and warnings about religious fanaticism taken too far, the mistrust of the government interfering with family actions, and many other commentaries that left me pondering after the final credits rolled.
